Day 06 : Favorite overall scene
- THE WEDDING -
First reason : intensive fangirling. At the moment I understood what was going to happen : “Amy, uncuff me now”, I just went all *squeeeeeeee* until the end of the episode. And the days after. And today. And tomorrow. And for the rest of my life.
But not only. For me this is the moment everything changes between the Doctor and River. In good.
It’s been 200 years that the Doctor knows River at this point of his life. I’d like to insist on the 200 years. Even for a Time Lord, it’s a huge part of his life. He probably didn’t see her for years sometimes but still, she was always a satellite in his life. We don’t know how many times he’s met her all this time but they had at least Jim the Fish (I just WANT Jim the Fish. Steven, do you hear me? Find a way to make us see Jim the Fish!), Easter Island, probably some others but he still doesn’t know why she’s in prison. Well, he knows but he doesn’t know the real reasons. Anyway. 200 years later, their relationship has probably changed, we can imagine that he’s closer to River each time, and don’t forget the wonderful “2” on her enveloppe. But our dear and so stupid Doctor still doesn’t trust her enough to tell her his secret.
On the other side, it’s only the second time that River/Melody meets the Doctor. We can imagine that a few years passed since Let’s kill Hitler, between 5 and 10 years probably, the time for her to become a doctor. She spent all these years loving the Doctor. Her own kind of love. I know it seems impossible to love someone you met only once but the thing is that she knows him. She studied him. She knows all the good and the bad things he has done. I think she truly loves him, and when she says that she’ll suffer more than every living thing in the universe, she mean it. Of course she’s wrong. But she’s in love. I already made a post about this anyway.
So, we have two characters at two completely different points of their relationship. But at the same moment. (… they’re so weird) And the wedding is the moment when they finally get synchronized.
I made a post about the Doctor’s choice. “River, River, why do you have to be this?” The one he can’t control, the one he can’t use as a pawn in his plan, the one who is his equal. And finally, 200 years later, he understands that. That’s the moment he understands who River is, the River he already knows, and all the things she’s done for him. Maybe. That’s what he decides to believe anyway. He chooses to believe that she always knew.
“You are always and completely forgiven.” As much as I love this quote, because it’s important in the Doctor’s acceptance of his feelings of River, she hasn’t done anything who needs to be forgiven, the suit controls her. He tells her that to make her feel less guilty, but the truth is that he doesn’t have to forgive her anything. Even less once she’s part of the plan. They’re equal, they have the same knowledge, they are both taking the decision to make the world believe that Melody Pond really killed the Doctor.
For the Doctor, the wedding is the moment he accepts that he is not superior to River, he’s doesn’t have any power on her, he can’t take a decision for her, he can’t make her do what she doesn’t want to do. He can’t use her. He can ASK for her help.
Let’s talk about River now. About Melody more precisely. She’s ready to destroy the universe to not have to kill the Doctor. The Doctor is cross at her because it’s, well, it’s not good. But there is an important moment. The moment the Doctor completely change his attitude.
“I can’t let you die!”
He’s like : “come on, I’m the boss here, do as I say!”
“I can’t let you die… without knowing you are loved.”
The words that change everything. Look at the Doctor’s face. It’s everything he needed to hear, that he didn’t know he needed to hear before he heard it. I think that’s not Melody talking anymore. It’s River. The protective River. The one who’s always here to save the Doctor. To save his life and to save his mind. The mature River who knows when and what he must learn, remember, know. The words are coming from the mouth of River, the Doctor feels it. And that’s when he’s finally listenning.
It’s the moment Melody is turning into River. She’s still the young psychopath in love : “I’ll suffer if I have to kill you.” “More than any living thing in the universe?” “…Yes”. (I personally think that this is the most beautiful love declaration ever but well, she’s a bit irrationnal) but she’s growing up. And with a little help of the Doctor, when he shows her that he trusts her, when he shares his secret with her, when he asks for her help, she becomes River Song for good.
“Then you may kiss the bride”
Excuse me while I scream that she’s TAKING THE FUCKING DECISION TO GO IN PRISON FOR A MURDER SHE WON’T COMMIT.
“Selfish child of the TARDIS”? Gone. She’s the amazing River Song who does what she will always do from this point : help and protect the Doctor. Excuse me again while I azertghnbendrf.
(And the kiss. Did I already said how much I love worship this kiss? The fact that it’s the teselecta is a bit frustrating but I have my headcanon and I stick to it.)

Apparently, some people think that the reason River stopped time was because she wanted to marry the Doctor before she kills him.

…SERIOUSLY?

Sometimes I’m just sitting here in front of my laptop wondering what is wrong in some people’s brains. Do they have one actually? Did they even watch the episodes they talk about? I’m not even going to write a rant. It’s not worth it. I just needed to point out the stupidity of this.

“And because all of history was happening at the same time when they got married, they are married forever, across all of time and space.”

OMGoddess! WHY didn’t I see this before? Everyone has been saying, “It’s not real, it took place in a different universe.”

WRONG!

It didn’t take place in a different universe, it took place throughout ALL OF TIME SIMULTANEOUSLY!

Therefore, they didn’t marry in a place they didn’t exist, they married everywhere at once, which means THEIR MARRIAGE EXISTS EVERYWHERE AT ONCE!

Time will never be the boss of my OTP.

The live chess… Has there ever been a better metaphor for how the Doctor lives his life, and how he defeats his opponents? Of course that game is at it most basic an analogy for how the Doctor wins throughout the episode: By conceding the game, he gets what he wants.

But here’s what I missed initially - River is the Queen. As everyone has noticed (and complained about at great length), River has throughout her life been treated like a pawn, been used (and mis-used and hurt and abused and exploited) for other people’s ends and moved across the board over and over. But River isn’t anybody. The result of all the maneuvering is that by now she (metaphorically) has 40,000 volts running through her, and the next person who touches her is going to burn. And that is the River at Lake Silencio. Someone who has been moved one time too many and will rather let universes collapse than be forced against her will again.

For most of the episode the Doctor tries to reason with her, tries to move her the way he’s moving and manipulating everyone else around him, but all he gets in return are deadly sparks - even with all of creation hanging in the balance.

The key turns out to be just the same as in the real match - concede the game. Stop trying to force her, stop using her, and instead acknowledge her for what she is - his equal, his partner, his Queen, his wife. And so they play the game together.

Haha, I just said that earlier to a friend ;) The Doctor is the King, he has to stand up to win, and the Queen is here to protect and save him by all costs.
